Designed by You Yin Ting, the Stop & Go commuter fixtures are a unique addition to urban environments. These fixtures integrate seamlessly into subway train platforms and other transient spaces, providing commuters with temporary spaces for various activities. The design takes inspiration from the thoughtless acts of urbanites, who naturally make the artificial environment their own.
The Stop & Go fixtures are characterized by their irregular compositions, which blend harmoniously with the urban rhythm. Each fixture set consists of screens, seats, shelves, footrests, perches, and semi-private zones. These elements are strategically placed to encourage commuters to engage with the space without conscious effort.
One of the key features of the Stop & Go fixtures is the ability to address the demand for privacy in crowded places. Different sizes of screens provide varying levels of privacy, allowing commuters to find a space that suits their needs. The recessed seats provide a safe place for commuters to store their belongings, while the concave shelves are perfect for hanging umbrellas or other items. The perches serve as active seats, encouraging commuters to interact with the space, and the footrests provide a comfortable spot to rest while waiting.
The Stop & Go fixtures also incorporate semi-private zones, which are defined by their shadowed areas. These zones create a sense of privacy without completely isolating commuters from the surrounding environment. By offering these semi-private spaces, the fixtures facilitate the sharing of public space and enhance the overall commuting experience.
The realization of the Stop & Go fixtures is made possible through innovative design and cost-saving measures. The perch and shelves share the same piece of fixture, reducing the need for additional molding and saving on production costs.
The Stop & Go project was carried out in Hong Kong from November 2013 to May 2014. During this time, You Yin Ting and the design team conducted extensive research on human behaviors in public transient spaces. By observing and analyzing thoughtless acts and natural human behaviors, they were able to identify design cues and inspirations for the fixtures.
The Stop & Go commuter fixtures have received recognition for their practicality and innovation. In 2015, the design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.
The Stop & Go fixtures are a testament to the power of thoughtful design in enhancing everyday experiences. By seamlessly integrating into urban environments and providing temporary spaces for commuters, these fixtures contribute to a better world of seamless commuting experiences.
